Photobook by Edward Thompson
Published by Schilt
In “The Unseen: An Atlas of Infrared Plates” (2016, Schilt Publishing), Edward Thompson explores the edges of human perception, focusing on invisible phenomena and events often overlooked. A distinguished British documentary photographer, Thompson has covered a range of subjects, from environmental issues to the impacts of war, always striving to closely empathize with his subjects.
His interest in infrared photography began in 2010 during a project in Pluckley, Kent, where he learned that infrared could potentially reveal ghosts. This discovery led him to use Kodak Aerochrome film, which captures light in the 750-1000 nanometer range, beyond normal human vision.
Thompson’s work transcends mere aesthetics, touching on the interplay of art and science and bordering science fiction. His infrared photography creates an alternate reality, making the real appear surreal and highlighting apocalyptic narratives like disease, pollution, and climate change. This approach mirrors the style of Phillip K Dick, presenting a distorted reality that reflects our own world’s struggles and challenges.
