In 2011, the song “Wath a fool I am” translated the feeling of dissatisfaction of a generation that would become known as “Geração à rasca” (struggling generation).

In the same year, a group of young people, encouraged by Deolinda’s song, created a social media page they called “Geração à Rasca”. The name was inspired by Vicente Jorge Silva, the director of the newspaper Público, who in 1994 used this term when referring to a group of students who were protesting against the increase in tuition fees in higher education.

The page was a major success and, from the numerous interactions and comments, emerged the desire to organize a protest that could materialize the feeling of discontent and revolt against the precariousness of living.

On March 12, 2011, the protest organized by the “Geração à Rasca” mobilized 300,000 people of all ages around 11 cities across the country. In Porto, it is estimated that the initiative brought together around 80,000 protesters.

This is my memory of that unique day.
