“Oneindig zwart“ (Infinite black) is about an expedition through the Odadahraun lava desert. An area without roads, without vegetation. It only consists of black lava chunks with sharp edges in chaotic formations and rubble fields. Water can only be found in one place in this void. I have crossed this plain and mountains on foot in seven days. “Infinite black” is a report of that.
When you walk, you become one with the landscape. You can’t help it. The landscape is its own entity that contains stories, and those stories of the landscape become tangible along the way and you become part of that landscape. The emptiness, the absence of color, offers room for reflections and intensive experience of being on the road. Therein lies the treasure: the beauty of small details in this wild environment. There is much to discover in the void.
The book reflects the black landscape: for example, the black-and-white photos are printed on gray paper, there are interleaves in which I printed black bottom structures on black in letterpress printing.
